Offshore wind likely to take longer

    June 27, 2022 - By Angela Macdonald-Smith

Victoria is targeting two gigawatts of offshore wind power supply by 2032, with the potential to have 13GW of such capacity by 2050; that amount would be five times the state's current renewables generation. Victoria's Energy and Climate Change Minister Lily D' Ambrosio recently cited its forecast expansion in offshore wind capacity as one reason for ruling out coal and gas power in the National Electricity Market's 'capacity mechanism'. However, experts suggest that the current capital costs of offshore wind are such that it is unlikely to be able to make any major contribution to Victoria's energy needs until some time in the 2030s.
