European Energy to provide green hydrogen for fuel cell at Port Esbjerg

    June 28, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

June 28 (Renewables Now) - Danish renewables developer European Energy A/S today said it has signed a contract with Port Esbjerg to supply the Danish port with green hydrogen from the first half of 2023.

The green hydrogen will be produced at European Energy’s wind farm in Made near Esbjerg and will be used in a fuel cell to generate clean power for vessels at the port.

The developer said Esbjerg municipality recently approved the construction of a PtX-facility in Made, where electrolysis will be powered mainly by two test wind turbines in Esbjerg set up by European Energy.

Heat resulting from the hydrogen production will be injected into the district heating network in Esbjerg. “This project demonstrates sector coupling in practice and will give us invaluable knowledge of the day-to-day operations of a PtX-facility,” said Rene Alcaraz Frederiksen, head of project economics and optimisation, Power to X.

Port Esbjerg chief executive Dennis Jul Pedersen said that vessels calling the port are showing growing demand for renewable energy. The CEO explained that the green hydrogen fuel cell technology will complement the port’s onshore power supply grid and that thanks to being mobile, it could be used where needed at the port.
