Conrad Energy breaks ground on 200-MW battery project in England

    August 2, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

August 2 (Renewables Now) - British power producer and energy services provider Conrad Energy on Friday officially launched the construction of a 200-MW battery energy storage system in Somerset, South West England.

The facility will be located in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, and is planned to become fully operational in November 2022. Conrad Energy will deploy the Tesla Megapacks technology. Once commissioned, the battery system will be capable of storing enough electricity to supply almost 14,000 homes over a two-hour period and will provide grid-stability services to National Grid and Western Power Distribution.

“The project fits with Conrad Energy’s strategy to support the energy transition through owning and operating resilient and flexible power generation and storage assets that provide vital grid services, particularly at times of low wind production and when demand is high,” said Chris Shears, Conrad Energy’s chief development officer.

By the end of 2022, Conrad Energy intends to have 200 MW of batteries in operation, in line with its goal to deploy 1,000 MW of capacity in the next few years. According to its website, the company currently owns 700 MW of flexible generation and over 150 MW of battery storage assets.
