Sweden: Svenska Kraftnät has neglected EU requirements for transmission

    September 6, 2022 - M-Brain Nordic News

The suspended operations of the Ringhals 4 nuclear reactor means that Swedish power grid operator Svenska Kraftnät will most likely have to continue to neglect the EU's requirements regarding electricity transmission between neighbouring countries. The regulations state that power grid operators must always ensure at least 70% capacity availability for transmission to other countries, but Svenska Kraftnät applied for an exemption earlier in 2022. However, the operator has already deviated from this several times this year, and if The European Union Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) rejects the application, it means that Svenska Kraftnät could face consequences for the infractions so far in 2022. Stefan Svensson, electricity market expert at Svenska Kraftnät, says that the most important thing is to ensure operational security and avoid outages. He argues that with Ringhals 4 temporarily closed, Svenska Kraftnät is legally bound to prioritse Swedish operational security instead of looking to Norway's needs.
