Conrad Energy bags permit for 50-MW battery project in England

    September 9, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

September 9 (Renewables Now) - British power producer and energy services provider Conrad Energy has secured planning approval to install a 50-MW battery energy storage facility in Somerset, South West England.

The two-hour energy storage system is planned to be built in North Petherton and will be the company’s largest scheme using local topography and innovative design to better fit the installation within the landscape, Conrad Energy said earlier this week.

The project plan envisages a set of biodiversity measures such as additional planting and landscaping to boost the local habitat and shelters for birds, animals and insects.

The permit comes on the heels of the planning permit obtained by Conrad Energy for a 15-MW four-hour duration battery energy storage project in Plympton, Devon. It also follows the official start of construction works at a 200-MW battery energy storage site in Somerset. To be equipped with the Tesla Megapacks technology, the facility is due to become fully operational in November 2022.

By the end of 2022, Conrad Energy intends to have 200 MW of batteries in operation, in line with a wider goal to deploy 1,000 MW of capacity in the next few years.
