I&M plans maintenance work at Mottville hydroelectric facility

    September 13, 2022 - Sturgis Journal

MOTTVILLEIndiana Michigan Power will close the reservoir boat ramp and restrict access to the canoe portage near the Mottville Hydroelectric Plant for maintenance work. Work began Monday, Sept. 12, and is expected to conclude on or before Oct. 21.

During the scheduled maintenance work, I&M asks those traveling or living near the hydroelectric facility to be aware of heavy equipment entering and exiting access areas. I&M also asks the public to stay away from any marked work zones.

I&M owns and operates six hydroelectric plants along the St. Joseph River. The hydroelectric plants, four in southwest Michigan and two in northern Indiana, have been in operation since the early 1900s.

Together, the six run-of-river plants generate more than 22 megawatts of electricity, which is enough to power 15,000 homes a year.
