Goldwind wins 500-MW order for Uzbekistan wind project

    September 16, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

September 16 (Renewables Now) - Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology (SHE:002202) on Friday said it has secured an order from UAE's renewables major Masdar to supply the turbines for the 500-MW Zarafshan wind project in Uzbekistan.

Goldwind will provide 111 units of its GW155-4.5MW turbine for the largest wind project in Central Asia. Project delivery will start in the third quarter of 2022 and is due to be completed by the end of 2024, the manufacturer said.

According to Sun Lianhua, general manager of Goldwind's Central Asia Russian-speaking region, Zarafshan “is a milestone project for Goldwind to promote China's foreignisation of wind power.”

“Uzbekistan is a pivotal country and geographic centre in Central Asia with abundant wind resources. In recent years, the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Uzbekistan has continued to move forward, bringing various opportunities for two countries to achieve green and low-carbon development,” commented Sun Lianhua.

Located in the Navoi region in central Uzbekistan, the Zarafshan project achieved financial close at the end of August. The wind farm will be capable of powering 500,000 homes and offsetting 1.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year, while contributing to Uzbekistan’s goal of increasing the share of green electricity to 25% by 2030.
