Switzerland seeks proposals for solar systems along national roads

    September 19, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

September 19 (Renewables Now) - The Swiss Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) today launched the application process for proposals for new solar plants in areas along the country's national roads.

Applications will be accepted until February 24, 2023, FEDRO said on Monday.

The authority is offering 15 lots that include 350 noise barriers and 100 rest areas free of charge. Interested parties can apply and, after a lot has been allocated, they will be responsible for the planning, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the photovoltaic (PV) systems. They also have to market the electricity these systems produce independently, which means it can be either sold to off-takers or fed into the grid.

FEDRO already uses the land around tunnels and at service sites for power generation to meet its own needs.

Making the selected noise barriers and rest areas available for solar power production will enable the Alpine country to tap the potential of the remaining plots along its roads which is estimated at 55 GWh per year.

The auction is launched after the Federal Council approved in August legal changes that allow the generation of green power in these places free of charge.
