    Hong Kong: Operational event at Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station

      The Nuclear Emergency Committee Office of the Guangdong Province notified the Security Bureau of an operational event at Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station (LNPS), a Security Bureau spokesperson said today. On September 17, during a regular routine test, station staff found that one of the backup diesel generators (which provide power during emergency and should normally be on hot standby) of Unit 4 of the LNPS was in operation unexpectedly. The Daya Bay Nuclear Power Operations and Management Co Ltd has released the details of this event on its website (Chinese only), which can be viewed in the "operational events" section under the "nuclear and radiation safety information" page of the website.

      Sept. 18 -- Hong Kong SAR Government issued the following news release:

      The Nuclear Emergency Committee Office of the Guangdong Province notified the Security Bureau today (September 18) of an operational event at Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station (LNPS), a Security Bureau spokesperson said today.

      Yesterday (September 17), during a regular routine test, station staff found that one of the backup diesel generators (which provide power during emergency and should normally be on hot standby) of Unit 4 of the LNPS was in operation unexpectedly. They immediately inspected the generator concerned and the associated emergency power supply system, and after confirming there was no abnormality, ceased operation of the backup diesel generator and returned it to normal condition. The Unit remained in a safe condition throughout the above event.

      This event was classified as a Level 0 deviation in accordance with the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale. It did not affect the safe operation of the Unit, the health of the workers, the nearby public or the environment.
