Naturgy, Equinor unveil 200-MW-plus floating wind project off Spain

    September 20, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

September 20 (Renewables Now) - Spanish utility Naturgy Energy Group SA (BME:NTGY) said on Tuesday that it is working with Norway’s Equinor ASA (NYSE:EQNR) on a 200-MW-plus floating wind project off the coast of the island of Gran Canaria.

The Floating Offshore Wind Canarias (FOWCA) project is the first to come out of the partnership that the two energy companies established earlier this year to jointly develop a scheme that can compete in Spain’s first offshore wind power auction.

According to Naturgy, such an auction is expected to take place on the Canary Islands, Spain’s archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean that has excellent wind resources and a capable shipyard industry that can switch to building and assembling equipment for marine renewables.

Naturgy and Equinor plan to use semi-submersible floating platforms for FOWCA and connect the wind farm to an existing substation, the utility said.

The partners are now in a stage where they are gathering input from local associations and other entities that will help them shape the FOWCA project.
