Siemens Gamesa unveils recyclable blades for onshore wind turbines

    September 22, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

September 22 (Renewables Now) - Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE) announced on Thursday that it has manufactured a recyclable blade for onshore wind turbines.

The new product comes about a year after the blade’s offshore cousin was first launched. The turbine maker said that its RecyclableBlade for onshore wind farms is available and ready for installation.

What makes the blade recyclable is that its composite materials can be separated using a mild acidic solution. The materials can be then used to make other products.

Siemens Gamesa did not say how many recyclable onshore blades it produced so far and in what sizes.

The first recyclable Siemens Gamesa blades for offshore wind turbines made their way to a commercial wind farm some ten months after the launch. German major RWE Renewables and Siemens Gamesa installed them at the 342-MW Kaskasi offshore wind farm in the German North Sea this summer.

Of all wind turbine components, blades have been the most difficult to recycle due to the composite materials that go into their production. According to Siemens Gamesa, around 85% of a wind turbine can be fully recycled, but decommissioned blades have been nothing but food for the landfill.
