Russia sends nuclear fuel to China's fast neutron reactor

September 29, 2022 - BBC International Reports (Former Soviet Union)

      By BBC Monitoring

Russia's civil nuclear power agency Rosatom says it has dispatched a first shipment of nuclear fuel to the Chinese fast neutron reactor CFR-600.

"The Machine-Building Plant in Elektrostal has completed the first shipment to China of nuclear fuel for the CFR-600 fast neutron reactor, China's flagship project in the field of fast nuclear energy. Before the end of the year, it is planned to send two more batches of fuel to the customer for the initial loading of the reactor and the first refuelling," the Russian news agency Interfax quoted Rosatom's press service on 29 September.

After the reactor is launched, the Chinese nuclear power plant in Xiapu County, Fujian province, will become the only nuclear power plant outside Russia with a large-capacity fast reactor. At present, only Russia has similar reactors, BN-600 and BN-800, operating at the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant in Sverdlovsk Region, the report said.
