German energy company to switch away from coal by 2030

    October 4, 2022 - CE Noticias Financieras

The German energy company RWE announced today that it wants to bring forward the phase-out of coal in its activities by eight years and dispense with this non-renewable energy source by 2030. The company's plan is provided for in an agreement on key energy issues between RWE, the German Ministry of Economics and the North Rhine-Westphalia Regional Ministry of Economics. According to the agreement, two power plants that were to be shut down at the end of this year will continue to operate until the European spring of 2024, the DPA news agency reported. According to the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Economics, this is intended to strengthen security of supply and save natural gas in the electricity market. It added that, despite the expected demand for coal in the next 15 months, additional sources of coal can be ruled out. The German government's goal is to "ideally" bring forward the phase-out of coal use in Germany from 2038 to 2030 at the latest. This measure is included in the coalition pact between the three government parties, the Social Democrats of the SPD, the Greens and the liberals of the FDP. (Télam)
