News: The Government of the UK has selected the West Burton power station site in Nottinghamshire, UK for the construction of a prototype fusion energy plant. The project, called Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP), is expected to require capital investment of more than GBP2.0bn (USD2.2bn) with operations expected to start by 2040. The UK Atomic Energy Authority will issue tenders in December 2022 for construction and engineering partner roles on the prototype fusion energy plant. Atkins and Assystem are the engineering delivery partner for Tranche One to develop the concept design for STEP. Tranche One is due to conclude in April 2024 (Construction Enquirer).
