Facilities under construction to protect nuclear waste from artillery strikes at ZNPP

    November 21, 2022 - ITAR-TASS

MELITOPOL, November 21. /TASS/. Protective structures, which should serve as an "airbag resource" to protect the storage of nuclear waste from possible hits by artillery shells are being built at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, an adviser to the CEO of the Rosenergoatom concern, Renat Karchaa, told TASS on Monday.

"The engineering facilities in question, according to our plan, should provide additional protection and serve as an airbag resource to protect the dry storage of nuclear waste from possible hits by heavy artillery shells," he said.

On Sunday, Karchaa told TASS that 15 strikes against the Zaporozhye NPP had been recorded in just one day. Some shells hit special building No. 2, where fresh nuclear fuel is stored, and others, the area of the dry storage site for spent nuclear fuel. He recalled that any artillery strikes at the nuclear power plant jeopardized nuclear safety. --0-- str/vvk
