Tens of thousands lose power near Lake Tahoe, in both California and Nevada, utilities say

November 21, 2022 - Michael McGough, The Sacramento Bee

Tens of thousands of homes and businesses in the South Lake Tahoe area were without power Monday morning, with widespread outages reported on both the California and Nevada sides of the lake.

The Liberty Utilities online outage map showed a total of 23,875 customers impacted as of 7:45 a.m. in California. Outages were reported in and near South Lake Tahoe, including Meyers and Emerald Bay; and in Alpine County, including Markleeville.

On the Nevada side, NVEnergy reported more than 17,000 customers without power, with outages concentrated near Stateline, Minden and Gardnerville.

El Dorado County officials in a social media post said the county’s offices in South Lake Tahoe would remain closed to the public until at least 10 a.m. The NVEnergy website showed an estimated restoration time of 10:45 a.m.

The cause of the outages was not immediately clear.
