EDF Renewables plans 114-MW battery near Norwich

    November 21, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

November 21 (Renewables Now) - EDF Renewables UK today unveiled plans to develop a 114-MW battery near Norwich in eastern England with a view of filing a planning application next year.

The proposed battery system will be located to the south of Norwich substation between Dunston and Swainsthorpe and connect into the substation.

The company, part of France’s EDF (EPA:EDF), will hold a public consultation until December 12. It intends to submit a planning application to South Norfolk Council in 2023.

The developer commented that as the UK government targets net zero carbon emissions by 2050 the country should replace its coal and gas-fired generation with low-carbon power such as renewables and this shift requires battery storage.

“As more of our lives are powered by electricity – from heating to cars – our energy system is changing. Batteries help to future-proof the grid and cost-effectively integrate more renewable power,” said Martin Cole, director of planning at EDF Renewables UK’s Storage and Private Wire division.

EDF Renewables UK and Ireland says it has an operating portfolio of more than 1 GW including battery, onshore and offshore wind, almost 5 GW of projects in planning and development and 700 MW in construction.
