EDPR expands Portuguese wind park to 62 MW with new Vestas turbines

November 29 (Renewables Now) - EDP Renovaveis SA (ELI:EDPR) has expanded an existing 50-MW wind park in Portugal by adding two new Vestas EnVentus turbines with a combined capacity of 12 MW.

Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) has supplied two V162-6.2 MW units for the Barao Sao Joao wind farm in Lagos municipality, which now has a total capacity of 62 MW, the renewables arm of Portuguese utility EDP - Energias de Portugal SA (ELI:EDP) said on Monday.

With 80-metre-long blades, the new turbines are currently the largest and most powerful in the Iberian Peninsula, EDPR pointed out. The original plant consisted of 25 units of 2-MW turbines.

The company expects that the new equipment will add more than 34 GWh of clean energy per year to the local grid, allowing Barao Sao Joao to meet the demand of some 27,000 people.

Now, Vestas has over 900 MW of installed or under-construction capacity in Portugal and nearly 6 GW in the Iberian Peninsula.
