SOUTH BEND, Indiana, Nov. 29 -- Indiana Michigan Power, an American Electric Power company, issued the following news release:
Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) plans to bolster electric reliability and efficiency for customers in southwestern Michigan and northern Indiana.
The South Bend-Niles Transmission Line Project involves:
* Rebuilding about 4 miles of power line from FourFlag Substation, off South 3rd Street in Niles, to the Indiana State Line, on Stateline Road.
* Rebuilding about 8 miles of power line from Stateline Road to South Bend Substation on Edison Road.
* Upgrading University Park Substation, off Indiana State Road 23.
The project strengthens the local electric transmission system by replacing aging poles and wires from the 1960s with modern equipment. Upgrading the substation increases capacity to address growing demand for electricity in the community. These project improvements optimize the line's operational performance, reduce the likelihood of extended power outages and enhance electric reliability for area customers.
Construction on the project is set to begin by spring of 2025 and conclude by early 2026.
Community members are encouraged to visit I&M's project page at IndianaMichiganPower.com/SouthBend-Niles to access information, view graphics and maps.
