Acciona Energia leads V2G pilot project in Spain

December 1 (Renewables Now) - Spanish renewables company Acciona Energia (BME:ANE) is launching a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) pilot project in the Balearic Islands, which will create Spain’s first bi-directional charging network for electric vehicles (EVs).

The network will be made up of 16 charging stations installed at sites of eight participating firms on the Balearic Islands. Acciona Energia said that it has provided them with eight EVs equipped with the V2G technology that they can use as energy storage, for self-consumption or to feed electricity back to the grid.

Acciona Energia will supervise the flow of electricity in both directions once the vehicles and the grid start to interact. This will enable it to monitor the main variables of V2G operations and to test and validate applications such as complementary services to the grid, or the stabilisation of demand peaks, among others, the renewables group said.

Spanish government agency, the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), funded the project. The first phase of the demonstration will start on the island of Mallorca, followed by the V2G network expansion to Menorca and Ibiza.
