Ørsted lands permit for 250-MW wind farm in N Dakota - report

    December 2, 2022 - SeeNews Renewables

December 2 (Renewables Now) - North Dakota’s Public Service Commission (PSC) has given the green light to Ørsted A/S’ (CPH:ORSTED) proposal to build a 251.6-MW wind farm in the US state, the Prairie Public News reports.

The scheme was put forward by project vehicle Badger Wind LLC, a unit of Orsted Onshore North America LLC, and is expected to require an investment of around USD 390 million (EUR 370.4m).

The future wind park, dubbed Badger Wind, is planned to be installed in North Dakota’s Logan and McIntosh counties, covering more than 31,500 acres (12,750 ha) of land areas west of Wishek. To be powered by 79 turbine generators, it is expected to produce power for 70,000 homes once it goes online in 2023. The capacity that will be delivered to the grid will be up to 250 MW, official documents show.

The developer estimates it will need 18 months to build the wind park. The development application shows that the plant could become operational as early as September next year, with the commissioning deadline set by end-2023.

Denmark-based Ørsted says on its website that the clean energy group has 11 onshore wind projects in the US, most of which are located in Texas. Badger Wind will be its first onshore wind park in North Dakota.
