EDP Renováveis (EDPR) secured a 15-year purchase agreement for 180 megawatts (MW) to supply wind power from the Headwaters III wind farm in Indiana, United States, to Cleveland-Cliffs, a rolled steel company.
EDPR said in a statement Wednesday that the power purchase agreement (PPA) with Cleveland-Cliffs, the largest rolled steel company in North America, was signed through the subsidiary EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA).
The 200 MW plant will be located in Randolph County, Indiana, in the United States.
"Headwaters III, located approximately 100 kilometers east of Indianapolis on the Ohio border, is expected to be operational by 2025 and will produce enough clean energy to supply the equivalent of more than 54,000 homes annually," he said.
EDPR has developed and will build and operate the Headwaters III wind farm, which is an extension of the 200 MW Headwaters I wind farm and the 198 MW Headwaters II wind farm, both in the same Randolph County.
"The project will create hundreds of jobs during construction and employ local team members to operate the wind farm. Headwaters III will also save over 900 million gallons of water per year, the amount of water that would be required to produce power by conventional generation sources," EDPR explained.
"This partnership between Cleveland-Cliffs and EDP Renewables on this project will support the company in its environmental and social sustainability goals and allows EDPR to expand its portfolio in the State of Indiana, reinforcing its position as the leading wind energy producer in the region," it stressed.
EDPR is a leader in renewable energy in Indiana, with 1,400 MW of installed capacity that generates electricity equivalent to the consumption of more than 372,000 average homes.
The company's operating renewable energy portfolio includes six phases of the Meadow Lake Wind Farm (White and Benton Counties), two phases of the Headwaters Wind Farm (Randolph County), and the Riverstart Solar Farm (Randolph County).
"Indiana is a vital market in EDPR NA's portfolio and the company continues to pursue other development opportunities within the state to further increase its presence and continue to bring economic benefits to Indiana communities," EDPR concluded.
