    FirstLight Begins Annual Drawdown of Candlewood Lake

      FirstLight Power begins annual drawdown of Candlewood Lake, which includes Squantz Pond, on Friday, January 20th, 2023. The drawdown will run until the opening of fishing season in early-April 2023. Water levels will fluctuate throughout the season and will drop to minimum pond levels to allow repair work on the dam to be completed.

      * The normal summer operating range of the station is from 429.5’-427’ and the drawdown will target an elevation of 418’-420’.

      New Milford, Connecticut, Jan. 23 -- FirstLight Power issued the following news release:

      FirstLight, the owner and operator of the Rocky River pumped hydroelectric station, began the drawdown of Candlewood Lake, which includes Squantz Pond, on Friday, January 20th, 2023. The drawdown, executed in consultation with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Candlewood Lake Authority will run until the opening of fishing season in early-April 2023. In order to execute required maintenance of the Rocky River Dam, a deep drawdown of Candlewood Lake is necessary this season. The normal summer operating range of the station is from 429.5’-427’ and the drawdown will target an elevation of 418’-420’. Water levels will fluctuate throughout the season and will drop to minimum pond levels to allow repair work on the dam to be completed. Due to unknown weather patterns, exact dates and associated lake levels are not available.
