Turkish company plans to supply Ukraine with floating power plants

Istanbul (dpa) - Turkish company Karpowership said on Thursday it plans to supply war-torn Ukraine with electricity from its floating power plants.

The firm aims to provide 500 megawatts of power for up to 1 million households in Ukraine as part of a deal struck with state-owned Ukrainian energy company ECU.

Nearly one year into its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has recently been targeting the country's critical infrastructure sites, condemning many Ukrainians to electricity, water and heating shortages during the winter.

Ukraine's energy system has suffered 12 massive Russian attacks, a statement by Karpowership quoted ECU CEO Vitaly Butenko as saying.

The country needs innovative solutions since building new power plants is not a viable option during war, Butenko added.

Moldova and Romania are likely locations for vessels to anchor and feed into Ukraine's grid within 30 days, Karpowership said.

It was not immediately clear when the power supply could start.

Blocked by Russia, Ukraine's Black Sea ports are currently only available for grain shipments as part of a Turkey and UN-brokered deal.
