Kazakh public to discuss choice of nuclear plant site in 2023

February 2, 2023 - BBC International Reports (Central Asia)

      By BBC Monitoring

The Kazakh government will put the selection of a site for the construction of a nuclear power plant to public discussion this year, the main state-run news website Inform.kz reported on 1 February.

It noted that the remarks were made by Energy Minister Bolat Akchulakov during a staff meeting.

"The Zhambyl district of Almaty region has been proposed as the optimal site for the nuclear power plant. The issue of selecting a nuclear power plant site will be submitted for public discussion this year," Akchulakov said, as quoted by the website.

The energy minister also recalled that a list of technologies was made last year for the construction of the plant. "In 2022, a shortlist of proven reactor technologies from suppliers, such as China, Korea, Russia and France was drawn up. This year, work will be carried out to select the reactor technology," he said.
