The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) informed that as part of the presentation of the Sonora Plan to diplomats from 80 countries and 25 international organizations, the state governor, Alfonso Durazo, and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, led a visit to the Puerto Peñasco Photovoltaic Power Plant, the project developed by the CFE is part of the second aspect of the Sonora Plan, which consists of the generation of electricity from solar energy. The CFE's Planning Director, Juan Antonio Fernández, explained that in its final stage, the Puerto Peñasco Photovoltaic Power Plant will occupy an area of 2,000 hectares and will have a generation capacity of 1,000 megawatts, the first of its kind in Mexico, as it combines photovoltaic technology and a 192 megawatt battery energy storage system that will support its operation and increase the reliability and stability of the electricity supply. Juan Antonio Fernández emphasized that the commissioning of this plant promotes the sustainable development of the state of Sonora, Mexico's energy transition and advances in the fulfillment of the commitments acquired by the Mexican State to combat climate change. In addition, the CFE will build a 315-kilometer transmission line that will run from Puerto Peñasco to Mexicali, laying the foundations for a future electrical interconnection between the National Interconnected System (SIN) and the Baja California System. This project will boost the economic growth of the agricultural, industrial and service sectors of Puerto Peñasco, Caborca and San Luis Río Colorado in Sonora, as well as Ensenada, Tecate, Tijuana and Mexicali in Baja California. The CFE highlighted that the plant will benefit 1.6 million users; approximately 536 thousand homes, and will avoid approximately 1.4 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, equivalent to taking approximately 270 thousand automobiles out of circulation. During his participation in the presentation of the Sonora Plan, Fernandez Correa emphasized that CFE's works are developed in strict compliance with the care of the environment, native communities and archeological heritage. "As part of the promotion of clean energy and the energy transition, the CFE will continue to develop its generation park in the region to provide the necessary clean energy in accordance with the steady growth in demand," he said in a statement.AMP
