Garrick Rochow, New CEO of Consumers Energy, Joins the Energy Central Power Perspective Podcast to Discuss His Transition to the New Role, Leadership in a time of Crisis, and Forward-Looking Utility Goals

3/9/2021

This week, the Energy Central Power Perspectives Podcast features an interview with Garrick Rochow, the CEO of Consumers Energy out of Michigan. After having featured Garrick’s predecessor in an episode last year, host Jason Price of West Monroe and producer Matt Chester (also Energy Central’s Community Manager) were able to hear straight from Garrick how the transition has gone for him and his coworkers in the past few months, amid a service area still dealing with the fallout from COVID and the economic fallout.

In this episode, though, you’ll hear Garrick’s enthusiasm for providing reliable and affordable service to his fellow Michiganders, his passion for caring for those communities in his service area, and his dedication to making sure all of his coworkers are heard and represented. All of these critical priorities are happening during the backdrop of decarbonization and a commitment to utility transformation, so with so much going on it means steady leadership and a constant vision are critical.

Garrick Rochow certainly seems keen to deliver on those promises, stating during this episode:

I believe in leader intent. Which is simply a concise statement of what we must do to succeed. From my perspective, the importance of leader intent is just the thoughtful recognition that empowerment cannot be achieved by telling people what to do, but where we're headed. If the intent is known, the leaders will view all of their decisions through that lens. We'll make the best decision given the direction and conditions in the moment.

I've been very transparent with my coworkers at Consumers Energy on my leader intent. Number one, leading the clean energy transition. And then number two, our pursuit of excellence through the Consumers Energy way. And number three, cultivating our culture, ensuring our leaders create the environment that reflects our values.

This conversation serves as a great reminder of what stepping up to be a leader in the utility industry can and should look like, so it provides inspiration for anyone in the business looking towards the future.

This entry into the podcast, like all of the series episodes, can be found on all major podcast outlets, including iTunes and Spotify, or it can be listened to directly on the Energy Central platform. Give it a listen and share your reaction in the comments.
