Nathan Shannon, CEO of SECC, and Elizabeth Moore, Manager at TVA, Join the Energy Central Power Perspectives Podcast to Highlight Utility Program Needs for Renters

Energy Central

The latest episode of the Energy Central Power Perspectives Podcast featured an in depth conversation with Nathan Shannon, CEO of the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative (SECC), and Elizabeth Moore, Manager of Commercial Energy Solutions at Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). SECC recently published a report entitled "Understanding the Needs and Wants of Renters," offering insights into how best to reach the often challenging market of residents who don't own their homes with utility programs and offerings. The insights gleaned from this study have already provided fuel for TVA to tackle these critical customers, so Nathan and Elizabeth were both primed to share first-hand insights with the podcast audience.

Households that rent their homes have been the least tapped into traditionally by utilities because they often lack the capital and authority for investing in energy programs, but the unfortunate irony is that these are the customers that often carry the most significant energy burden and could thus most benefit from assistance to bring down their power bills. As Nathan noted:

Any type of program that a utility can partner with landlords, multi-family property owners to bridge that gap and open the door for renters to be involved in a program or offering will encourage much more participation. We saw some fear from consumers in approaching their landlords about asking for upgrades, or maybe it's smart appliances, smart thermostat, but if a program can be developed in partnership with the utility and multifamily property owners and landlords, that will really open the door for those customers for participation.
