Germany : The EU project DigIPlat develops the basis for the interaction of transnational energy platforms

    For more security of supply in the international energy market, the research project "Digital solutions for the interoperability of flexibility platforms (DigIPlat)" from the Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU) together with partner institutions from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH region) is developing the basis for the interaction of transnational energy platforms.

    In order to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality as part of the energy transition, on the one hand a further expansion of electricity generation from renewable sources is required, on the other hand the decentralization of energy resources and the coupling of different sectors of the energy system. The integration of market participants that offer flexible capacities for generation, storage and load shifting requires scalable digital flexibility platforms. However, standards for such platforms, interoperability and specifications of flexibility requirements still need to be defined. The research project "Digital solutions for the interoperability of flexibility platforms ( DigIPlat)", which will receive funding from the three participating countries and from the European Union as part of the " Horizon 2020" research and innovation program until April 2025.

    The project is being coordinated by Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU) with the following partner institutions from the DACH region: the electricity transmission system operators Transnet BW and Austrian Power Grid AG (APG), the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), Fichtner IT Consulting and the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT), and the Institute for Operations Research and Computational Finance (ior/cf-HSG) at the University of St. Gallen.

    The main goal of the research project DigIPlat is to identify measures for the implementation, adaptation and knowledge transfer of standardized digital solutions for the interaction of transnational flexibility markets in order to ultimately shape the transformation of the energy system for economy, society and industry for Europe safely. Based on this, an international platform is to be developed on which the transnational flexibility markets can work together in order to keep the secure power supply at a high level internationally. The project should therefore define a standardized framework as well as currently existing flexibility platforms with broad stakeholders- Participation and prototypes are technically evaluated. The economic benefit is evaluated in a market model to be developed, which includes intraday and control power markets as well as redispatch and a common network model.

    The multinational research cooperation would like to use distributed energy resources ( Distributed Energy Resources, DER) for transmission and distribution system operators on scalable digital platforms. It is about small and medium-sized generation, consumption or storage components such as e.g. B. domestic battery storage, which can be coupled with photovoltaic systems, small hydroelectric power plants, heat pumps or the combined battery capacity of many electric cars. The exchange of the offered flexibility potential between the platforms and coordinated activations across multiple voltage levels or market areas will help to ensure grid stability and promote an economically efficient and transparent allocation of flexibility, both at national and international level.

    Establishing international standards for flexibility platforms and standardized flexibility requirements are crucial to achieve interoperability between platforms at national and international levels, allow for better coordination of vertical and horizontal market integration, and optimize the allocation of flexibility between platforms.
