Norway: Reindeer owners take legal action against wind farm

M-Brain Nordic News

Reindeer owners are taking legal action against the development of a wind farm in Mosjøen in Norway. Torstein Appfjell, head of the reindeer grazing district, says the development violates the human rights of reindeer herders, and that the development therefore is illegal. Geir Jørgensen, MP of the Red Party (Rødt), compares the project with the plan for a wind farm at Fosen, which was ruled illegal by the Norwegian Supreme Court. He says the 72 wind turbines that already have been erected have be torn down. The wind farm in Mosjøen is among the largest in northern Europe. Norwegian Minister of Oil and Energy Terje Aasland does not wish to comment whether the Fosen case should set a precedent for the coming legal treatment. Wind farm developer Eolus Vind has got a permit for 400 MW, up from initial 330 MW, and has erected larger wind turbines than initially planned.
