Liberty hits 'switch' on new electric substation at Tuscan Village in Salem

Jun. 14—A new electrical substation located at Tuscan Village in Salem is now operating.

Officials from Liberty, along with Gov. Chris Sununu, gathered Monday morning to ceremonially hit the switch on the new infrastructure aimed to address increasing load demand in southern New Hampshire.

The Rockingham Substation is part of the utility company's 10-year plan and largest ever capital investment with an estimated cost of $35 million, expanding the distribution capacity of the Salem-area electric grid by 50 megawatts, a 100% increase.

"This modernization will ensure that our system can meet the growing electric needs of the Salem area and continue providing reliable electric service to our customers," Liberty NH President Neil Proudman said in statement.

As part of the project, two 70-year-old substations will be decommissioned. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
