SDG&E customers to get a bill credit of $64 each of the next two months

Rob Nikolewski, The San Diego Union-Tribune

It's time for the annual California Climate Credit and San Diego Gas & Electric customers will receive automatic discounts of $64.17 in each of their monthly statements for August and September.

Administered by the California Public Utilities Commission, the proceeds of the credits are distributed among all investor-owned utilities in the state, such as SDG&E, Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison. The credits come from the money generated by the state's cap and trade program that requires power plants, natural gas providers and large industries that emit greenhouse gases to buy permits on the carbon pollution they produce.

The amount of the credit fluctuates from year to year, depending on the revenue generated by the cap and trade program. This year's credit is significantly larger than in 2021, when SDG&E customers had $34.60 deducted from their bills each month in August and September.

No action is required of customers; the credits will be applied automatically to their statements. Customers of community aggregation programs in the San Diego area — San Diego Community Power and Clean Energy Alliance — will also see the deductions on their August and September bills.

Small-business customers are also eligible to receive the discounts.

In the past, customers received the credit in their April and October statements but SDG&E in 2020 petitioned the California Public Utilities Commission to switch the timing to the hot-weather months of the August and September billing cycles because that's when bills typically are at their highest.

The California Climate Credit program also includes a deduction for residential customers with natural gas hookups, which is applied each spring. In the SDG&E service territory this past April, the reduction came to $43.06.
