    News: Eskom has selected South Korea-based Hyosung Heavy Industries and China-based Pinggao Group to supply battery energy storage (BESS) for a 343MW BESS project in South Africa. The project, co-financed by the African Development Bank, New Development Bank, the World Bank and the Clean Technology Fund will be developed in two phases. The first phase will include the installation of around 199MW with 833MWh of distributed BESS at eight Eskom distribution substation sites and 2MW of solar PV capacity, with commissioning expected by June 30 2023. The second phase will include 144MW/616 MWh of storage at four Eskom distribution and 58MW solar PV, with commissioning due by December 2024 (Renewables Now).
