August 2 (Renewables Now) - Two companies were declared winners in Chile’s power tender on Monday, in a competition that awarded only 14.8% of the entire auctioned volume of electricity.

Chilean energy commission CNE intended to place 5,250 GWh per year for 15 years, but ended up with 777 GWh/year offered by the two winning bidders -- Zapaleri SpA and Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV).

The technology-neutral contest wrapped up with an average price of USD 37.380 (EUR 36.495) per MWh, up by 57.2% compared to last year’s tender, with both winners offering to sell power from their renewable energy projects.

Details on the bids are in the table below:

Awarded bidder: Awarded volume (GWh/year): Average price (USD/MWh): Technology:
Zapaleri SpA 126.0 38.359 Solar PV, storage
FRV Development Chile I SpA 651.0 37.190 Solar PV, wind

Spanish language energy portal Energia Estrategica exclusively learned that Canadian Solar Inc (NASDAQ:CSIQ) is behind the entity Zapaleri SpA.

Zapaleri and FRV, selected from a pool of 15 participants, will be entitled to 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with qualified distributors.

The power supply is due to start from January 1, 2027.
