ScottishPower mulls green H2 hub at Britain’s busiest container port

SeeNews Renewables

August 9 (Renewables Now) - ScottishPower, part of Spain’s Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE), said today that together with Hutchison Ports it is studying the potential for a multi-hundred-megawatt green hydrogen hub at the Port of Felixstowe, Britain’s busiest container port.

The location is not far from the company’s existing and future offshore wind farms in the East Anglia region.

ScottishPower is working on plans for onshore use of green hydrogen, including for road, rail and industrial applications, with the potential to produce liquid forms, such as green ammonia or e-methanol, for shipping and aviation. Opportunities for export are also being considered.

Engineering and site development works will continue with the aim of aligning with customer demand from 2025 onwards.

“This strategically important project could potentially create a clean fuels hub that could unlock nationally significant decarbonisation for the region, as well as playing a role in international markets,” said ScottishPower hydrogen director Barry Carruthers.

The UK doubled its ambition for hydrogen production to up to 10 GW by 2030, targeting at least half of this to be electrolytic hydrogen, under its energy security strategy, unveiled earlier this year.
