UK’s onshore wind pipeline reaches 37 GW

September 8 (Renewables Now) - Over the past 12 months, UK developers have added more than 4 GW to the country’s total pipeline of onshore wind projects, which now stands at 37 GW, up from 33 GW in October 2021, according to a report by tade body RenewableUK on Wednesday.

In the 12-month period, only 0.34 GW became fully operational, while capacity under construction or consented expanded by 1.1 GW to 6.8 GW.

In terms of project status, the pipeline includes about 14.2 GW of operational capacity, some 9.5 GW in pre-planning development, around 6.5 GW in planning, more than 5.5 GW consented and over 1.2 GW in construction.

Most of the projects are concentrated in Scotland, with 78% of the pipeline capacity located there.

“We can’t tackle the energy crisis without onshore wind - it’s one of our cheapest sources of new power and once projects have the go-ahead they can be up and running within a year,” said RenewableUK’s chief executive Dan McGrail.

He criticised the government for still not having set a target for onshore wind and for only tentatively opening up the discussion about removing the block on onshore wind in England.

“We need to see a commitment of at least 30 GW of onshore wind by 2030 and local communities across the UK being given the chance to benefit from generation in their area where it has local support,” added McGrail.

The report was released alongside RenewableUK’s Onshore Wind Conference 2022 in Glasgow.
