The journalist added that the gas production of Gazprom, which is controlled by the Kremlin, fell by around 20% to around 151 billion cubic meters.

The newspaper said Russia’s gas production fell 10.3% in April compared to the same period in 2022, to about 55 billion cubic meters.

Russian natural gas production fell mainly due to political tensions with the main buyer, the European Union, after the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Last year, the West imposed a series of sanctions on Russia and its state enterprises following the war in Ukraine.

No direct sanctions were imposed on Gazprom’s natural gas exports, a major source of company revenue, but export volumes almost halved last year to 101 billion cubic meters.
