Belo Horizonte, Brazil (dpa) - During German Economy Minister Robert Habeck's visit to Brazil, German energy firm ThyssenKrupp nucera and Brazilian chemical company Unigel signed a memorandum of understanding to quadruple the production of green hydrogen.
The deal was announced by the Ministry of Economy in the south-eastern Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte on Sunday.
Unigel, one of the largest chemical companies in Latin America and the largest producer of nitrogen fertilizer in Brazil, is a pioneer in the production of green hydrogen in the country. ThyssenKrupp nucera supplies the necessary technology.
In July, Unigel announced plans to quadruple its production of green hydrogen in the coming years. The electrolyser capacities are to be expanded to over 100 megawatts, so that about 40,000 tons of green hydrogen could be produced annually.
If the electricity for hydrogen production comes from renewable energies, the product is also considered "green." In industry, hydrogen can replace fossil fuels such as gas, oil and coal. However, its production is very energy-intensive.
