On Saturday, March 18, 2023, Congressman Anthony D'Esposito issued the following statement regarding Equinor's proposed offshore wind energy production project:
"I have serious reservations about Equinor's proposed local offshore wind project. This development would be a landscape-altering change to my hometown and Equinor has failed to properly address residents' legitimate concerns surrounding the project's potential environmental, economic, and health effects on the community. This startling absence of transparency displayed by Equinor is indicative of the company's lack of care for Long Islanders and all who love our South Shore. We must not allow corporate greed to hold communities hostage and tear apart the fabric of our hometown in order to make a quick buck.
As our community's local representative in Washington, D.C. I will always advocate for the interests of NY-04 neighbors above all else - interests that include holding corporations like Equinor accountable. To that end, I plan to co-sponsor legislation with my colleague, Rep. Van Drew of New Jersey, that calls for a moratorium on large scale offshore wind projects like Equinor's until outstanding questions are sufficiently addressed and made clear to the public. I also intend to participate in scheduled hearings on this matter where I will further voice my opposition to the way Equinor has treated residents of the City of Long Beach, Island Park, Oceanside, Point Lookout, Lido Beach and all other impacted areas.
To be clear, I am a supporter of wind power and the budding industry's ability to furnish Long Islanders with good paying jobs and sources of clean energy. Local community members, professionals, labor organizations, and small businesses stand to benefit from wind energy's potential, but the way Equinor has approached such a project here at the local level is abhorrent.
I will be meeting with representatives from Equinor on Capitol Hill in the coming days where I will convey the community's opposition to this project and demand greater transparency from the company. I look forward to this meeting and will be sure to provide NY-04 neighbors with an update once it takes place."
