Sarawak ready to share sustainable energy development experience with neighbouring countries -- Abang Johari

    March 27, 2023 - Malaysian Government News

Kualalumpur: Here is the text of news released by official news agency Bernama on its website:

Sarawak is ready to share its experience with neighbouring countries in the field of renewable energy generation for mutual benefit in terms of environmental and economic sustainability.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state already has the experience of developing three hydroelectric projects in Batang Ai, Sri Aman as well as in Bakun and Murum (both in Kapit) to assist its neighbouring countries.

"Sarawak has already supplied electricity to West Kalimantan and the next step is to distribute it to Sabah and Brunei," he said in a statement posted on the Sarawak Premier's official Facebook page today.

The statement was issued in conjunction with his visit to Malinau in North Kalimantan, Indonesia at the invitation of PT Kayan Hydropower Nusantara (PT KHN), an Indonesian investment holding company.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister Hazland Abang Hipni accompanied Abang Johari on the visit.

PT KHN will develop the largest hydroelectric power station in Indonesia located on the Mentarang River, about 35 kilometres from Malinau and the Indonesian President Joko Widodo is expected to perform the groundbreaking ceremony for the US$2.6 billion (US$1=RM4.49) project.

Sarawak Energy Bhd, the main energy supplier company owned by the Sarawak government, is a partner in the hydroelectric project which is planned to generate 1,375 megawatts of electricity for the North Kalimantan industrial zone.

The construction project will commence in the first quarter of next year with expected completion by the end of 2029 and full operation the following year.
