Iberdrola leads 'Atmosphere' consortium to boost green hydrogen production

    March 28, 2023 - CE Noticias Financieras

Iberdrola has announced that it will lead the Atmosphere consortium, a project that will integrate different companies to innovate in new technologies that can be applied to critical equipment in green hydrogen generation plants, thus covering the entire value chain, the company said in a statement.

The consortium will also include Ingeteam Power Technology, Inerco Ingeniería Tecnológica y Consultoría, ABC Compressors, Ingeniería y Diseño Europeo (Idesa) and Innomerics, which will seek to reduce the investment and operating costs of green hydrogen plants.

The project, which will run from 2022 to 2025, has a budget of 6.2 million euros and is part of the Missions program of the Center for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI), from which it has secured funding of 4.1 million euros.

In addition, the initiative will promote public-private collaboration through the participation of seven public research organizations (OPIs): Tecnalia, IIT Comillas, the Idonial Foundation, the Public University of Navarra (UPNA), the Association for Research and Industrial Cooperation of Andalusia (Aicia), the CEIT Technology Center Association and the Idesa Technology & Research Centre.

The R&D&I proposals developed by this consortium will be validated at Iberdrola's Puertollano (Ciudad Real) plant, which houses one of the largest hydrogen production systems using electrolysis in the world, with 20 megawatts (MW) built and a production of up to 3,000 tons per year.

With this initiative, Iberdrola advances in its objective of reaching 350,000 tons of renewable hydrogen production per year by 2030 and reinforces its investment in this sector, in which it already has more than 60 projects in eight countries and alliances with 150 SMEs and large companies.

With the hydrogen plants that the company has in Barcelona and Puertollano (Ciudad Real), Iberdrola intends to continue innovating to develop a "one hundred percent green" hydrogen value chain, later concentrating this production in the industrial hub of Palos de la Frontera (Huelva).
