EDP accelerates its plans for green hydrogen in Spain. The company, presided by Miguel Stilwell and managed by Ana Paula Marques in Spain, has already initiated the environmental procedures for the two large projects it is developing in our country: the Asturias hydrogen valley in Aboño and Los Barrios, in Cadiz.
Both projects will account for almost all the investment the company plans to make in this technology. In total, the two projects will receive 450 million out of the 500 million foreseen in its strategic plan. Specifically, the company has just submitted the documentation to develop 130 MW of electrolyzers at the Los Barrios thermal site, which represents an investment of 195 million euros. The processing will be done following the guidelines of the Accelerator Unit of the Andalusian Regional Government.
This project, which follows the application submitted for Aboño with an investment of 295 million, has been considered strategic by the European Commission, as it is included in the so-called Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI). It has also been proposed for the granting of aid by the IDAE (Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving).
The documentation submitted for this environmental process includes two main phases. The first phase has a total electrolyzer capacity of 130 MW and is expected to be commissioned in the first months of 2026. The second phase of the project, if market conditions are favorable, will have another 400 MW of electrolyzer capacity and will be in service by the end of 2030.
