March 30 (Renewables Now) - Danish cable maker NKT A/S (CPH:NKT) has signed a joint venture (JV) agreement with Taiwanese sector player Walsin Lihwa Corp (TPE:1605) provide technical support for the construction of the first subsea power cable factory in Taiwan.
The planned facility will produce high- and medium-voltage AC power cables mainly for the Taiwanese offshore wind industry, NKT said on Wednesday.
The factory is planned to be installed in the city of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan, which is the country’s largest industrial centre and is known as its maritime capital. Its construction is planned to commence later this year. With trial runs planned to be carried out at the end of 2025, the manufacturing plant is expected to begin full production in 2027.
“We expect high growth in the Taiwanese market in the coming decades and this partnership is an important first step for NKT to establish a presence and a platform for future growth in the region,” said NKT’s president and CEO Alexander Kara.
The formation of the JV is subject to customary regulatory procedures.
