H2 Green Steel reserves over 700 MW of Nucera electrolyser capacity

    May 22, 2023 - SeeNews Renewables

May 22 (Renewables Now) - H2 Green Steel, the Stockholm-based industrial start-up that is getting ready to build a green steel plant in Sweden, will be relying on more than 700 MW of alkaline electrolysers supplied by Thyssenkrupp Nucera AG & Co KGaA for its maiden project in Boden.

The company, formally H2GS AB, has signed a contract with Nucera to reserve electrolyser production capacity of the above-mentioned amount and to award the German firm the electrolysis plant engineering job.

The giga-scale electrolysis plant in Boden will be using hydro and wind power to produce green hydrogen for on-site consumption in a process called direct reduction (DR). More specifically, iron ore will be reduced to sponge iron to enable the production of green steel.

This digitalised and cycle-oriented steel plant is expected to commence operations at end-2025, with a gradual ramp-up to follow in 2026. In its initial phase, the facility will be able to manufacture 2.5 million tonnes of green steel and is planned to double its production output by 2030.

“This electrolyser agreement indicates a change in market dynamics and is also a proof of our new business model for reservation of production capacity,” stated Werner Ponikwar, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Nucera.
