Eneco: Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management switches to Maasvlakte wind power

Eneco started construction of Maasvlakte 2 wind farm in early 2022. Wind farm will contribute to making the Dutch government more sustainable. Rotterdam, May 22 -- Eneco issued the following news release:

On the edge of the second Maasvlakte, Eneco has been building an innovative wind farm on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat (the Department of Public Works) for the past 1.5 years: Maasvlakte 2 wind farm. The 22 turbines are now producing green electricity with which the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management is switching completely to renewable energy in one go.

Green electricity to make the Netherlands more sustainable

The 22 wind turbines produce 416 GWh of renewable electricity annually. This is equivalent to the average annual consumption of 152,000 households. The green power will be used to make the energy supply of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (the ministry under which Rijkswaterstaat falls) completely sustainable. For offices, but also for 20 tunnels, 1143 bridges, 5500 km of highway lighting.

From 2024, the remaining half of the electricity produced will be supplied to the Ministries of Defence, Justice and Security and the Interior and Kingdom Relations, as well as the National Property Agency, to be used in buildings such as defence complexes, prisons, courts and government offices. The wind farm will contribute to making the government more sustainable. With power from Maasvlakte 2, 40% of the electricity consumed by the central government will be green. This is an important step towards the state's goal of 100% renewable electricity by 2030.

Accelerated realisation through cooperation

Eneco started construction of this wind farm in early 2022. A unique farm, with 10 turbines on the embankment and 12 turbines on the beach, some of which are even footed in the water at high tide. Built with offshore technology on an onshore site. The rapid realisation has also been made possible thanks to close cooperation with the municipality of Rotterdam, the province of Zuid Holland, the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the State Property Agency and continuous coordination with stakeholders.
