South Korean Team to Initiate Inspection Mission at Japanese Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant

22 May 2023 (Qatar News Agency) South Korea's inspection team initiated its works on Monday at the Japanese Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in the context of resolving the standoff between Seoul and Tokyo over discharging the radioactive seawater from the plant overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The Japanese team holds technical meetings on Monday with officials from the relevant Korean ministries, in addition to holding question-and-answer sessions with the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and the Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority.

In addition, the team will initiate the inspection operations next Tuesday and Wednesday inside the plant and will hold in-depth discussions accordingly followed by other inspection rounds.

The issues of discharging the radioactive seawater from the plant emerged in March 2011, when the Japanese devastating earthquake caused problems in pressure and cooling processes in the reactors leading to the upsurge in the radioactive activity.
