Germany's RWE buys out Canada's Northland in North Sea wind farm

Essen (dpa) - German energy company RWE has bought the 49% stake in four planned North Sea windfarms held by Canada's Northland Power, paying ?35 million ($37.6 million) to take full ownership.

The two companies had been jointly developing the turbine cluster on four sites to the north of the East Friesian island of Juist. The four windfarms with a total output of 1.6 gigawatts are to be commissioned in two stages between 2027 and 2029, RWE announced in Essen on Thursday.

They are expected to generate around 6 terawatt-hours of electricity every year, theoretically equivalent to the consumption of 1.5 million households each consuming 4,000 kilowatt-hours per year.

"Becoming the sole owner of the Nordsee cluster aligns with our ambition to further grow our position as a global leader in offshore wind. As it will be Germany's first gigawatt-scale offshore wind cluster, it will provide us with significant size and scale," RWE Offshore Wind CEO Sven Utermöhlen said.

RWE was supporting decarbonization in its domestic market, Utermöhlen added. "And we are going for even more as we plan to take part in the large German offshore wind auctions in summer this year."
