Green Hydrogen Conclave: Nitin Gadkari Calls for Affordable Energy Transition

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari's address at the 'Green Hydrogen Conclave' emphasized the urgency of adopting sustainable and affordable fuels to combat pollution and reduce India's economic dependency on fossil fuel imports.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the importance of finding cost-effective and economically viable fuels to combat vehicle pollution. Inaugurating the 'Green Hydrogen Conclave' in Mumbai, the minister highlighted the benefits of alternative fuels such as bio-CNG and green hydrogen in reducing pollution and fuel costs.

Gadkari revealed that India has the potential to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually. He called upon all stakeholders to make these fuels accessible to the public at affordable rates and to raise awareness among citizens about their significance. The minister stressed that for green hydrogen to be effective, it must be affordable, urging stakeholders to prioritize cost reduction. The government has taken the initiative to harness the potential of waste to create wealth, he added.

Speaking about the challenges faced by the country, Gadkari identified the enormous economic burden caused by the import of fossil fuels, amounting to lakhs of crores of rupees. Additionally, he acknowledged the severe air pollution problem, particularly in metro cities, as another significant challenge. He underscored the global importance of decarbonization in addressing climate change.

Gadkari expressed his belief that the vision of a self-reliant India and a five trillion-dollar economy can be realized through the increased production of cost-effective, pollution-free, and environmentally friendly indigenous products. He stressed the need to reduce imports and mitigate all forms of pollution in the country. He further aspired to make India an exporter of energy.

Highlighting the country's energy sector, Gadkari mentioned the rapid development of thermal power, hydro power, and wind power. He also advocated for exploring nuclear power as a zero-emission clean energy source. Recognizing the significance of agriculture and energy, the minister proposed leveraging proven technology and the power sector to create employment opportunities.
