June 1 (Renewables Now) - Germany-based green power developer Q Energy said today it is repowering the Souleilla-Corbieres wind farm in France, with the reconstruction expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
The wind farm was built in 1999 by the French business of UK-based developer RES that was acquired by Hanwha Solutions Corp, Q Energy’s parent, in 2021.
Commissioned in 2001, the wind park has reached its anticipated operating lifespan after 22 years of operations. Its 16 turbines will be replaced by new ones of the same number, position and dimensions as the wind farm is located in the exclusion zone of a French weather radar, which precluded the use of larger turbines. The new technology, however, will allow the facility to increase its annual generation to about 71 GWh a year from 60 GWh. The company highlighted that wind farm’s components have almost entirely been recycled or reused.
The repowerting project, which had been previously announced by RES, has been ongoing since the summer of 2022.
Q Energy said that repowering is part of its strategy for mature wind markets, like France or Germany, and that it is to launch a further four projects in France for a total installed capacity of 56 MW between 2023 and 2024.
