Vietnam struggles with rolling electricity outages amid power crunch

    June 6, 2023 - Xinhua News Agency

HANOI, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Daily electricity outages lasting several hours are fraying nerves at the height of a sweltering summer in Vietnam, plunging homes and offices into rolling blackouts and bringing factories to a sudden halt, local media reported on Tuesday.

The country's state utility, Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), has repeatedly reminded consumers to conserve energy by turning off appliances and setting air conditioning at no lower than 26 degrees Celsius.

Industrial parks, including those housing facilities of Foxconn and Samsung, have reportedly suffered power cuts.

The acute power shortage has come as a shock to manufacturers who have already been hit by an economic slowdown.

The government has called on households and businesses to save energy, while the country is ramping up electricity imports from neighboring countries China and Laos to ease the shortage.

Vietnam aims to double its energy generation capacity to over 150 gigawatts by 2030 and increase the share of renewable energy in its power mix. Enditem
